Wearing a Wig During Surgery

Posted by kristing in Wigs - (0 Comments)

Many women who choose to wear a wig for cancer patients ask the question “can I wear it for my surgery?” Whether the surgery is a lumpectomy or something routine, the answer can vary from hospital to hospital.

Most hospitals nowadays are very strict and will not allow any nail polish, makeup, or even cancer wigs. The reasoning for all of these is sound, however it can make women very uncomfortable.

You will be given a surgical cap before you go into surgery and most hospitals will not allow you to wear your wig underneath it. Surprisingly enough, many women are more mortified when they wake up from surgery that they aren’t wearing a wig than they are concerned about how their surgery went!

For those who would like to remain seen with their wig on there are a few things they can do. First, wear your wig until the very last moment. Speak to your recovery room nurse before your surgery. This will be the person who wheels you from the recovery room to your more permanent room. Ask them if they would mind replacing your wig after surgery even if you’re still sleeping. This can help calm your fears and most nurses are more than willing to help.

Giving Your Wig a Trim

When you purchase a human hair wig, even a high quality wig, you might need to slightly modify it so that it fits your face shape and style. This requires a little know-how about hair and trimming it. Even if you purchase a premium quality human hair wig, you will need to give it a trim every once in awhile to avoid breakage and split ends.

The first thing to remember is that you should always trim your wig while you’re wearing it. If you don’t do this you might end up cutting the wig too short for your face or to your liking, and unfortunately wig hair doesn’t grow back if you get a bad haircut!

Secondly, get yourself a pair of trimming shears. Don’t use regular kitchen or craft scissors. This can lead to huge mistakes and ruin a perfectly good wig. Invest in a good pair of trimming shears and they’ll last you a long time.

Third, always trim the hair slightly longer than you think you want it. That way you can fix any mistakes that you make without making everything too short for your tastes.

After you’ve finished trimming the wig while it’s on your head, take it off and put it on a wig stand. This way you can see if there are places you missed and need to touch up.

Perming a Human Hair Wig

Some people are reluctant to perm their own hair for fear of damaging it but really want curly hair. In this instance many people purchase human hair wigs to perm instead of their own hair. There are a few things you should know before you purchase a wig for this purpose.

First of all, make sure that your human hair wig is of good quality and that it’s actually permable. Many wigs for women are straight styles. Sometimes this means that the hair has actually been treated to stay straight and will not take curl well at all. They have been treated with a hydroxide based relaxer that will not perm no matter how hard you try. Also, some types of human hair don’t take curl well naturally. So this means that even if your wig has not been treated it might not take curl. Keep all of this information in mind when you go in to purchase a wig and make sure you ask as many questions as you can of the seller so that you have all the pertinent info that you need. Also, make sure that you know if the hair used in your wig has been color treated because you will need to select a perm formula specifically for color treated hair.

Wigs in the Summer

Spring is coming and so is the hot weather. With it getting so warm it can be hard to keep cool when you’re wearing a custom wig. Sweat and heat can make wearing a wig almost unbearable, but here are some tips to help you from overheating.

First, get yourself a good wig base. A wig cap is great for keeping your human hair wig in place, but it can also help your skin breathe a little better. Try wearing a fishnet wig cap. These bases are ventilated so that your scalp can breathe and sweat. This will keep you cooler than a regular wig cap.

Secondly, invest in a gel band. This is a band that goes under the wig to help lift it away from your scalp. This means that air can circulate under your wig and sweat can evaporate leaving your head cooler!

Cornstarch based baby powder can be a life saver on really hot days. Sprinkle a little of the baby powder on your scalp before you put on your wig. Through the day, the cornstarch will soak up the sweat and leave your head feeling fresh and clean. The baby powder element will keep your skin from drying out or getting irritated.

Wigs and Fashion

Through history wigs went in and out of fashion. In ancient Egypt everyone wore a human hair wig. In England and France in the Elizabethan period, it was the same. Though the wigs went out of style and out of favor from time to time, they always came back.

It might interest you to know that in the 1880s in Paris, a hairstylist put custom wigs on runway models to give the fashion show some novelty. I don’t think they had any idea how much this would change the modern view on wearing a wig. Not only did it make it fashionable but it made it acceptable. If the fashion models could wear it and look good, why couldn’t everyone else?

In modern times, there are still models that wear wigs on the runway. It makes it easier for them to conform to a look that the designer has in mind without altering their appearance in a semi-permanent way. It is with wigs that a person can create for themselves a new look for a short period of time. Again, this makes them perfect for the modeling runway.

During fashion week this year, Milano Collection wigs were featured in a show by an up and coming designer.

Wig Maintenance

Wearing a wig on a daily basis is bound to cause stress on the quality wig. Even though it is a human hair wig, the hair is not gaining nutrients from your scalp to keep it healthy. You will need to provide maintenance to your wig on a routine basis to keep it looking clean, lush, and healthy. Here are some tips to help you with your wig upkeep.

First, know this, you should regularly wash your wig. One of the things you can do to keep it shiny and bright is use a conditioner. Be sure not to over condition though! Over conditioning your hair can actually cause an unnatural over brightness and lead to excessive tangling.

Other ways to avoid tangling during the upkeep of your wig include proper washing technique. Don’t mix it all together like you would with regular hair. This will cause an inordinate amount of tangling that will take extra styling and care to get out. You should wash in a downward motion and never wash without a foam head or without wearing it.

Try not to over rub the web or cap of the wig. This will cause the need for more maintenance and possibly a professional wig maker.

Diversity in Wigs

There are several big celebrations coming up this spring. Religious festivals, spring parties, and even the early warm weather barbecue are all approaching with haste! You need to look your best. That’s why now is a great time to buy custom wigs!

Quality wigs are important but something else you should consider is diversity. One day you may want to be a redhead with a short pixie haircut for a baby shower or a christening. The next day you may want to have long blonde hair to go to church or to temple. This kind of diversity in your wig collection is very helpful for looking and feeling your best for big occasions or from day to day!

Men like to say that women are fickle and can’t make up their minds, but when you have this many choices, who could blame you for taking awhile to choose. It’s sort of freeing for you to wake up in the morning and have the choice to pick what you’ll look like that day.

This kind of diversity in your collection also allows you to take your time in working on a particular hairstyle for a large event without having to go without a wig on a daily basis.

Rooting Women’s Wigs

It’s the generally accepted rule of thumb that a quality wig is defined by it’s ability to look absolutely one hundred percent natural. This can be difficult to achieve with some wigs. Sometimes, no matter how wonderful you look in the wig, someone will come along and realize that it’s not your actual hair. But there’s a great way to trick even the eagle eyes on the street.

It’s a new technique called “rooting.” Many people are starting to dye their human hair wigs just at the roots to mimic the look of real hair growth. It’s a semi involved process but I have faith that you can do it at home.

It comprises several steps. The first is sealing the lace on the wig so it doesn’t bleed. You can do this with wig styling glue. You only need to seal the area near where you’re going to dye it, near the part in the hair. After that, tinfoil your hair in pieces. You will dye the roots similar to dying highlights. This will insure that, while it looks like your hair is growing, there won’t be a solid line of dye near the part.

If you have questions, ask your beautician!

At first I thought that some big name women celebrities were just a little lazy when it came to going to the stylist to get their roots touched up. I thought maybe they just didn’t have time in their busy schedules to head to the beautician. Then I started seeing more and more famous women with this new hairstyle. Ombre hair is all the rage from Hollywood to New York City this year.

You can get human hair wigs for women in this new ombre dye style. Ombre is basically when the roots of your hair are much darker than the tips. It gives a sort of variegated look. It’s a simple enough concept to understand but not so easy to pull off on your own if you don’t want it to look like you just dyed the bottom tips of your hair. Luckily you can get a human hair wig already dyed in this style!

You don’t have to worry about it going out of fashion either. This seems like a trend that is going to stick around for awhile because of how effortless it looks and how many celebrities are jumping on the trend bandwagon. If you end up hating it down the line, you can always dye your wig back, but I have a feeling that you’ll love this look.

Buying your very first cancer wig can bring up a lot of emotions and feelings. You might be feeling sad or even angry. But what you should be feeling is beautiful. Wigs are nothing that you need to be ashamed or embarrassed about. They are to give you confidence! They are to make you happy, proud, and beautiful.

When you purchase your very first wigs for cancer, you need to keep those positive affirmations in mind. You also should keep these tips in mind.

If you’re measuring your head for a wig before you lose your hair, be aware that your head is actually slightly smaller than your measurement. Also remember that if you are undergoing treatment, you’re most likely going to lose some weight. You want your wig to be snug but not too tight. You don’t want it to be loose. If the wig is too loose there is a distinct possibility that it will slide around on your scalp and cause irritation or even fall off.

Another thing to keep in mind is that while you are undergoing your therapy and treatment, it is possible that your face shape will change. Get yourself a straight wig and style it larger as you go through your treatments.
